DS-01 Control Production Desk — Build Specification
Type C — Construction Guide · Local joinery (Damascus, birch ply imported via TR) · Baltic-birch ply / MDF-core carcass
Overview
The Control Room desk is DS-01 in the contractor package: a single custom joinery carcass, 170 cm wide × 80 cm deep, Baltic-birch ply / MDF-core, with a 72–74 cm finished work surface, a raised monitor bridge, two integrated 8U rack bays (DS-02), an 88-key pull-out tray (DS-03), a full-length cable-management spine and the recessed tilted display well (DS-06/DS-07).
Fabrication location: Damascus local joinery (Baltic birch imported via TR). Rack rails, sliders and mounts are imported hardware — see the DS-02/DS-03 brand calls below. Shop-built and delivered through D5.
This page governs fabrication; DESK-LAYOUT governs geometry. Both are dimensioned to BOQ DS-01..DS-07 and the LEGO build book (DESK section). Where anything on this page disagrees with the contractor package,
the package wins — raise it as a shop-drawing item, not a site decision.
Overall Dimensions
Primary Dimensions
Single Carcass — No Return Wing
| Component | Width | Depth | Height |
| Carcass (DS-01) | 170 cm — HARD max | 80 cm | 72–74 cm finished surface |
| End panels ×2 | ≤10 cm each | 80 cm | full height |
| Tray aperture (DS-03) | 150 cm (170 − 2×10) | — | tray top ≈66 cm |
| Rack bays (DS-02) ×2 | 19″ in each pedestal | — | 8U each; rack top ≈45.6 cm |
| Monitor bridge (DS-05) | raised at the rear | — | VESA 100/200, speaker-free |
One unit, not an L. The desk sits at the Control NORTH wall (VC partition) in the H1r3 local zone 30→200 — 170 cm is a hard maximum, not a target. The ≤10 cm end panels are load-bearing on the spec: they are what allows the 150 cm tray aperture, which is what allows an 88-key controller (136–146 cm) to fit.
Do NOT add a return wing, and do NOT exceed 170 cm overall. The zone is bounded by the NW full-trap face and D3 clearance; a wider desk fouls one or the other.

Carcass & Pedestals
DS-01 / DS-02
Specifications
| Parameter | Value |
| Carcass material | Baltic-birch ply / MDF-core (per H1r3 spec) — furniture-grade joinery |
| Overall | 170 w × 80 d cm; end panels ≤10 cm each |
| Pedestals | 2, one at each end, each carrying an 8U rack bay |
| Rack rails (DS-02) | Penn Elcom R0863 rack strip or Adam Hall 61535 + cage nuts + tie bars |
| Bay ventilation | Ventilation slots at the REAR of each bay |
| Floor contact | Resilient iso-pads under ALL feet + levelling |
Assembly Notes
- The two 8U bays go in at carcass stage — retrofitting rails into a closed pedestal never sits square
- Knee space between the pedestals stays clear for the DS-03 tray hardware
- Rack top lands at ≈45.6 cm (10 cm plinth + 8U); the DS-03 tray slides above the bays at ≈66 cm
- Shop-built and delivered through D5 — confirm the door aperture before glue-up
- Edges eased and sealed; nylon washers at the bridge feet, no metal-on-metal squeaks
Do NOT: substitute a welded steel frame — DS-01 is joinery, and the rack bays are integrated into the ply pedestals, not hung off a frame. Do NOT let the desk touch the wall gypsum: it stands on resilient iso-pads under ALL feet with a gap, or it shorts the isolation. Do NOT power rack gear from anywhere but the DS-04 loom.
Work Surface & Display Well
Desk Top — DS-01
Specifications
| Parameter | Value |
| Finished height | 72–74 cm AFF — the datum for everything else on the desk |
| Material | 25 mm birch plywood (Baltic birch, B/BB grade) |
| Edge treatment | Walnut edge banding (solid wood, glued and sanded flush) |
| Finish | Matte polyurethane, 3 coats, sanded between coats (220 grit) |
| Front edge profile | Slight roundover (3 mm radius) for comfort |
| Surface underside | ≈70.5 cm — must clear the ≈66 cm tray top |
DS-06 Recessed Tilted Display Well
The recess in this desk is not a control-surface pocket — it is the DS-06 display well at desk centre, holding a reclined panel so the Genelec reflection off the glass is thrown down into the operator zone instead of into the engineer’s ears. Mirror geometry rotates that bounce by 2× the tilt angle, which is why the angle is an acceptance criterion and not a comfort preference.
| Well Parameter | Value |
| Tilt | 40–50° recline ONLY — 8–36° is the FORBIDDEN band; near-flat ≤7° also rejected |
| Panel | 24–27″ MATTE (anti-glare), OWNER-SUPPLIED — a gloss panel is a rejection |
| Bottom edge | at the 72–74 cm surface |
| Well pit | ≤4 cm below the surface top — any deeper fouls the DS-03 tray envelope |
| Top edge | 27″ panel lands 95–99 cm; HARD CAP ≤108 cm (below OW-1 sill 110) |
| Footprint | 25.7 cm at 40° / 21.6 cm at 50°; ≤28 cm allowance → keyboard zone 52 cm |
Precision required: Cut and line the well with a CNC router or a template and flush-trim bit; test-fit the cradle before finishing. The installed recline is measured with a digital angle gauge, not eyeballed — 36° and 40° look identical and only one keeps the reflection out of the engineer’s ears. Anything in 8–36° is a REJECT: rebuild the cradle, do not shim it.
Honest limit: the well eliminates the desk-top comb (+0.94 ms, first dip ≈526 Hz) at desk centre only. The flat surface remains at the flanks, in front of each Genelec, so the comb persists on those paths — the IsoAcoustics tilt-back and clear-mirror-zone rules STAND.
Monitor Bridge
DS-05 — Raised Bridge
Specifications
| Parameter | Value |
| Position | Raised at the REAR of the carcass |
| Material | 25 mm birch plywood (matching desk surface) |
| Support | Ply uprights into the carcass, nylon washers at the feet |
| Mount | VESA 100/200 bracket — the display itself is OWNER-SUPPLIED |
| Load rule | Speaker-free and load-light — display only |
The bridge lifts the owner display so the Genelecs aim past it, not through it. The speakers do not live here. [AC]
Do NOT put the monitors on the bridge. Per the H1r3 speaker rule, the 2× Genelec 8030C sit on their IsoAcoustics stands at the desk FRONT edge, baffle ≈25 cm off the partition, tweeters at 120 cm. At ≈25 cm the quarter-wave SBIR null lands ≈343 Hz — above Schroeder (253 Hz), where the room’s broadband panels and QRD have traction. Pushed back to the bridge (≈0.95 m) that null drops to ≈90 Hz, in the untreatable modal region. Never hard on the desk surface either.
OW-1 disclosure: a centred large display on the bridge sits exactly in the OW-1 band (sill 110 → head 160) and would block the engineer’s view into VO. Mitigation at shop drawing: offset the display EAST toward the D3 side and keep the west portion of OW-1 clear. Disclosed, not hidden.
Tray & Storage
DS-03 — 88-Key Pull-Out Tray
Specifications
| Parameter | Value |
| Tray width | ~150 cm (the full 170 − 2×10 aperture) |
| Sliders | Accuride 3832EC-class full-extension, HEAVY-DUTY ≥45 kg/pair |
| Tray top | ≈66 cm — clears the ≈70.5 cm surface underside |
| Travel | FULL extension; flush-parks under the work surface |
| Clearance | Slides ABOVE the DS-02 bays (rack top ≈45.6 cm) |
An 88-key controller measures 136–146 cm, so it fits the ~150 cm tray with 4–14 cm margin — but only if the end panels stay ≤10 cm each. A 61-key controller on the desktop is a fallback, not a requirement, and fits the same tray with no change order.
Make-or-break detail: the sliders must be rated for a weighted 88-key controller and park it flush so the operator chair rolls free. Under-rated sliders sag under a weighted action and the tray stops closing.
Storage
Both pedestals are consumed by the DS-02 8U rack bays — this desk has no drawer schedule in the contractor package. Bulk storage for the facility is the ST-01 video storage cabinet (~120 × 60 × 200 cm, closed joinery, in the Video room), not the desk.
Do NOT add drawers into the pedestals without a shop-drawing check: a drawer box in a pedestal fouls the 8U bay, and a drawer under the surface fouls the DS-03 tray envelope. If the owner wants desk storage, it is a shop-drawing item priced separately — it is not in DS-01 as specified.
Equipment Layout on Desk
Equipment Positions
Everything in this table is OWNER-SUPPLIED (see AV Equipment) — it is not contractor scope and is not in the DS-01..DS-07 BOQ lines or the budget ladder. It is shown so the joiner knows what has to fit where.
| Zone | Equipment (owner) | Position / rule |
| Front edge, left | Genelec 8030C (L) | On IsoAcoustics, baffle ≈25 cm off the partition, tweeter 120 cm |
| Front edge, right | Genelec 8030C (R) | On IsoAcoustics, mirrored; never on the bridge, never hard on the surface |
| Surface, centre | 24–27″ MATTE panel | In the DS-06 well, reclined 40–50°, top edge ≤108 cm |
| Bridge (DS-05) | Large display | VESA 100/200; offset EAST so OW-1’s west portion stays clear |
| Upper (DS-07) | Eye-level display | Gas-arm that swings aside, or fixed EAST-offset bracket; arm clamps to the rear spine rail, NEVER the bridge |
| Surface, keyboard zone | Apollo x4 audio interface | Desktop unit on the 52 cm keyboard zone; keep the mirror zone between monitors and ears clear of tall gear |
| DS-02 bays (16U total) | Owner outboard / rack gear | Power lands on the DS-04 loom. Contents NOT yet settled — the equipment sources disagree; allocate at shop drawing |
| DS-03 tray | 88-key controller (136–146 cm) | Flush-parks under the surface; USB bus-powered, no mains outlet consumed |
| Floor, beside desk | DAW workstation tower | Full-tower case does NOT fit an 8U bay; knee space stays clear for DS-03 tray hardware |
Desk power is AT CAPACITY. The DS-04 6-way IG strip is fully allocated by design: display 1 + Genelec 2 + interface/rack 1 + workstation 1 = 5 of 6 used, 1 spare. No chargers on the desk spur (those live on the EL-06 station), and no daisy-chained strips, ever. Any additional device needs its own outlet plan — the Control room carries 10 counted ways under the H2f spare rule, so there is a real outlet for it.
Unscheduled gear — do not build to it. The SSL UF8, SSL UF1 and Mackie Big Knob Studio+ appeared on earlier revisions of this page but are in no equipment schedule and no BOQ line — not in AV Equipment, not in DS-01..DS-07, not in the owner-equipment appendix. A recessed control-surface pocket has therefore been removed from the work surface: the only recess is the DS-06 well. If these controllers are real, they need an equipment-schedule line and a fresh surface-allocation check before any pocket is routed — the well already occupies desk centre.
Cable Management
DS-01 spine + DS-04 loom
Cable-Management Spine
| Feature | Specification |
| Location | Full length of the REAR edge of the carcass |
| Function | Every desk run loomed, labelled and strain-relieved into it |
| Rear spine rail | Takes the DS-07 gas-arm clamp — never the monitor bridge |
DS-04 Power / Data Loom
| Element | Specification |
| Outlet strip | 6-way isolated-ground (Legrand class) fed from the AV-01 spur |
| Data | 2× Neutrik etherCON feed-through |
| USB | 1× USB pass-through grommet |
| Labelling | BOTH ends of EVERY run, to the cable run-schedule IDs |
Cable discipline: keep mains and audio/data physically separated in the spine. Rack gear in the DS-02 bays powers from the DS-04 loom, never from a separate strip.
Data is at capacity too. The desk has exactly two etherCON feed-throughs, and the Control-room camera run (CAM-C, talkback TB-03) consumes the second one — so the desk is at capacity on data as well as on power. Any further desk data point is a new wall plate under the CN-03 discipline, not another desk feed-through.
Room Fit Analysis
Clearance Verification — H1r3
Desk in the Control Room
| Dimension | Value | Source / calculation |
| Usable zone | local 30 → 200 | NW full-trap face → D3 clear (H1r3) |
| Zone width | 170 cm | 200 − 30 = 170 — HARD max, not a target |
| Carcass width | 170 cm | DS-01 — consumes the zone in full |
| D3 jamb clearance | 3.5 cm | desk edge to jamb at local 203.5 |
| Tray aperture | 150 cm | 170 − 2×10 end panels |
| Wall gap | iso gap, no contact | resilient iso-pads under ALL feet |
The desk faces OW-1 (window local 87.6→167.6 against the desk’s 30→200), so the seated engineer’s sightline runs over the DS-06 well and through the window into VO.
Tight fit: at 170 cm the desk consumes the whole usable zone with only 3.5 cm to the D3 jamb. Swing D3 through its FULL arc at dry-set and confirm no contact with the desk, the extended DS-03 tray, or the chair. [HP]
Do NOT fix the desk before the dry-set sign-off. Everything after it is terminated and levelled in place — a 10 cm surprise here costs a rebuilt loom.
Cost Estimate
Per the contractor BOQ
DS-01..DS-07 Price Bands
| Line | Scope | Qty | Band (USD) |
| DS-01 | Carcass 170×80, birch ply / MDF-core, surface, bridge, spine | 1 unit | $600 – $1,150 |
| DS-02 | 8U rack bay — Penn Elcom / Adam Hall rails, cage nuts, tie bars | 2 bays | $70 – $180 |
| DS-03 | 88-key pull-out tray + Accuride-class full-extension sliders | 1 unit | $120 – $300 |
| DS-04 | Power/data loom — 6-way IG + 2× etherCON + USB grommet | 1 set | $150 – $350 |
| DS-05 | VESA display bracket on the bridge | 1 unit | $40 – $110 |
| DS-06 | Recessed tilted well — cradle, trim, 40–50° tilt frame | 1 unit | $180 – $420 |
| DS-07 | Upper display mount — Ergotron LX-class gas-arm or fixed bracket | 1 unit | $90 – $260 |
| Desk total (DS-01..DS-07) | $1,250 – $2,770 |
The budget ladder carries the desk and the ST-01 video storage cabinet ($450–850) as one line at $1,850–$3,800 [band corrected 2026-08 H2e]; the small uplift over the line-item sum is install and contingency. ST-01 is a Video-room cabinet, not part of this desk.
Correction — the previous figure on this page was wrong. This page carried ~$720, built from a steel-tube frame and a drawer set. That number never carried the rack rails, the heavy-duty Accuride tray sliders, the DS-04 loom, the VESA bracket, the DS-06 well cradle or the DS-07 gas-arm — and it priced a desk that is not the one being built. Quote against the DS bands above, not the old total.
Displays, monitors, controllers and the workstation are OWNER-SUPPLIED and are not in these bands.

After Installation in Room (dry-set, before fixing)
- Desk set in the H1r3 local zone 30→200, facing OW-1; 3.5 cm clear of the D3 jamb
- Desk level on its resilient iso-pads; no contact with the wall gypsum [AC]
- DS-03 tray pulled FULLY out with the operator seated — no clash with the chair zone or couch line
- D3 swung through its FULL arc — no contact with desk, extended tray or chair [HP]
- Well recline measured with a digital angle gauge: reads 40–50°. Anything 8–36° is a REJECT — rebuild the cradle, do not shim it [AC]
- Well panel top edge measured off finished floor: ≤108 cm; seated sightline through OW-1 (sill 110) clear over the well [AC]
- Well panel is MATTE; with room lighting ON, no luminaire face reflected in the glass (else the fixture is inside the ~129 cm keep-out radius and MOVES) [AC]
- Speaker positions marked: desk FRONT edge, baffle ≈25 cm off the partition, tweeters at 120 cm — listening triangle verified [AC]
- DS-07 upper-display position marked: swung-aside arc or east offset; OW-1’s west portion proven clear

Acceptance: the desk is accepted when every shop item passes, the dry-set fit is signed off in writing, and the four DS-06 acceptance criteria (tilt 40–50° measured · matte panel · top edge ≤108 cm · pit ≤4 cm) are each verified on site. The tilt is measured, not eyeballed: 36° and 40° look identical and only one of them keeps the reflection out of the engineer’s ears.
